Top Amsterdam Music Venues

Amsterdam has always been a party city, a center for entertainment and nightlife. It is a perfect place for live music lovers as any taste in music from classical to heavy metal will be satisfied in Amsterdam.

Concertgebouw – in the very heart of the city - is a perfect place for classical music lovers. To hear the greatest opera performers visit either Muzieltheater or the Theatre Carre.

The music scene here in Amsterdam is probably the most exciting one in Europe, as Amsterdam has one of the best music venues and here are the top ones:

Long time ago Paradiso used to be a church, but in 1967 it was invaded by hippies who wanted to convert the church into an entertainment club. Pretty soon Paradiso became a synonym for rock music and hippie culture. Thanks to hippies it became the first spot in Amsterdam where the soft drugs were tolerated and Paradiso became associated with enormous clouds of hashish smoke. According to the ban on smoke in public areas in 2008 they had to ban smoking, but the venue’s smoking room is still inside the Paradiso.

Among the famous artists who filmed the concerts there are the Rolling Stones, Jamiroquai, Nightwish, the Cure, Nirvana and Lenny Kravitz. The Sex Pistols played their last show together with Madlock here in Paradiso. The price for the Rolling Stones show in 1995 was thousand dollars. Even Keith Richards himself considered this performance to be the best one in their career.

Other artists who played there are: Nine Inch Nails, U2, Florence and the Machine, Within Temptation, Radiohead, Stereophonics, Guns N’ Roses, David Bowie, The Velvet Underground, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Police, Muse, Foo Fighters, Ramones, Metallica, 30 Seconds to Mars, Pink Floyd and Coldplay.

Melkweg (is Dutch for “Milky Way”) is one of Amsterdam’s most versatile live music venues, as it hosts different music dance events on the weekends. It also includes cinema, art gallery and music dance halls. The venue itself still possesses its rock’n’roll charm with beer in plastic cups.

Heineken Music Hall

Heineken Music Hall is able to host more than 6 000 people. Such famous names as Radiohead, Beyonce and Pink performed on this stage. It is located pretty close to Amsterdam ArenA – the biggest stadium in Holland. Music events are also held there. Tina Turner herself chose the stadium for her performance during world-famous Wildest Dreams Tour.
